I love Frank Miller’s ‘Dark Knight Returns’. It was one of the biggest influences on my artistic growth, along with a LOT of Bill Sienkiewicz and Mike Mignola. This piece is a pin-up I did for the Lille Comics Festival I’m attending this fall. They requested a Batman illustration to use as an exclusive print for the show.
I wanted to evoke Lynn Varley’s washed-out palette so I cranked down the saturation wherever possible – an exception being Robin’s costume. I think brighter colours illustrate her enthusiasm against Batman’s gray grumpiness.
Also, Carrie Kelley is the coolest Robin ever.

OMG wow! This is amazing! You are seriously my favourite comic artist out there, Karl. Fantastic work.
Awesome. I always imagined him as a muscular elderly Clint Eastwood.
Very nice image, man. I love how the saturation works, and I gotta agree on carrie Kelley being the best Robin.
I’m looking forward to the Montreal Comic Con. Too bad this wont be a print there, it is lovely.
Hi Karl!
Very cool illustration.
I am looking forward to meeting you in Lille this year. I go to that convention every year, this year will be special with you and Cameron coming!
